Getting back to your questions: there are certain online spaces which make me feel like a guinea pig running on a wheel and others where I feel like a human being making meaningful decisions. The former type of experience encloses me in a state of aimless, desperate compulsion, whereas the latter empowers me to preserve my rights & values and to live with mindful intention. When considering these experiences, I keep coming back to a root question underlying this distinction: in which direction are the incentives aligned? Towards power or empowerment? My sense is that chipping away at an answer to this question requires some measure of both romanticism and futurism.
I’ve also enjoyed using the internet to connect with others who feel different, to realize we’re not as alone as we may first believe.

I wish there was a social network where instead of a “profile page” you could set up your own “secret hideout” page and decorate it and invite your friends to leave notes or little items, or have sub-chats there. I’ve always loved the secret hideouts you could find in games like WoW, especially when you might run into friends or rivals and strike up a conversation in the local chat.
When discussing alternatives for today's extractive and toxic online world, the usual commentary is 'but they don't scale up'. But what if the future of the internet is all about scaling down? In Potato Internet, the small scale allows the building of a functioning social network from scratch, rethinking all layers of the system, from hardware to protocols and governance. We must help young people rediscover silence, reflection, the ability to ask questions, the depth of relationships, and openness to transcendence.
