'Anyone can edit', not everyone does: Wikipedia's infrastructure and the gender gap'Anyone can edit', not everyone does: Wikipedia's infrastructure and the gender gap. [p. 6]Text blockIndeed, the envisioning of Wikipedia as the sum of all human knowledge is an historical continuation of
earlier encyclopedias that set up a particular relationship between the expert and the layperson, the non-expert, or the learner, as the receivers of knowledge.
The very definition of the encyclopedia is that it is comprehensive ‒ that it holds a summary of all information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch.
That encyclopedias describe themselves as representing all that is known reflects a particular understanding of knowledge that implicitly rejects the idea that some knowledge cannot (and perhaps should not) be known to all.Text block

A People Map of the USThe former president of Wikimedia Chile, Marco Correa, would say, “The knowledge may be neutral, but the act is not.”Text blockIf we let ourselves believe that we’re simply a free encyclopedia, we risk losing sight of the power and possibility of our work. Knowledge as always been a tool of power -- great empire and wealth have been built with its service, and great injustice has been done in its name. The very idea of liberating knowledge from power, decoupling it from access and wealth, and placing its construction, utility, and value in the hands of every person on the planet is fundamentally radical.Katherine Maher

Teaching with Wikipedia [Open Resources] - Google DriveTitle: name women by their current or final professional names. Avoid their married names if they are known professionally by their maiden names.
Avoid defining women compared to men: referencing them as wives and daughters should only occur in the biography section and be worded the same way it is worded with men, rather than being in the lead. The lead should describe their contributions, activities and professional achievements, avoiding to mention their gender or marital status.
Avoid using the term "the wife of" and introduce concepts such as "husband and wife," "partners" or "companions" etc. where applicable. We can say, for example, that "she is married to" rather than using the term "she is the wife of."
Avoid gender-specific terms in the description of the woman's profession or trade. It is not necessary to say "woman writer" or "poetess" when her gender will be indicated in various other ways, such as pronouns.
Avoid using diminutives such as "Annie" or "Becky" unless these are part of her professional name, in which case they usually need not appear outside the lead.
Throughout the article, apart from the lead, name women by their professional last name as is done in the biographies of men.
In articles, avoid using images of husbands, fathers, or family, unless it is strictly necessary and adds quality to the article. These images generally ignore women's individuality without adding important information to the article.Wikipedia:Wikimedia Deutschland/Diversithon Berlin/Listen – Wikipedia

Indigenous knowledge on Wikipedia and WikidataNon-indigenous contributors can — and should — work to improve the coverage of Indigenous content across Wikimedia projects, but unless the movement includes more Indigenous people writing about their own communities, we will always fall short. That challenge is exacerbated by the fact that Indigenous communities aren’t interchangeable, just as manitō isn’t interchangeable with Kanobo.Indigenous knowledge on Wikipedia and Wikidata – Wiki Education

analysis_wikimedia_germany_editor_survey_2016_on_welcoming_culture.pdfI want to add a final note on here: we should be careful not to mistake the technical features of a garden for the ethos of gardening. We have reached the point in the gardening hype train where people seem to think backlinks, hover previews, and visual graphs are what define a "digital garden."
This is misguided. Gardening is a practice that treats a personal website as a constantly evolving landscape where you develop your ideas in public.
Gardens are...
a) Explorable, rather than structured as a strictly linear steam of posts. This is usually achieved through deeply interlinking notes where readers can navigate freely through the content.
b) Slowly grown over time, rather than creating "finished" work that you never touch again. You revise, update, and change your ideas as they develop, and ideally find a way to indicate the "done-ness" state to your reader.
No framework, platform, plug-in, service, or fun interface element defines a garden, and never will. Do whatever works for you, at whatever technical level feels comfortable. Just keep gardening 🪴what gardens are not, maggie appleton

An Organizer’s Perspective Part I: ‘Anyone can edit’ is not a strategy for growing the Wikimedia movementAnyone can edit is a theory (i.e. there could be editors, because the software lets them edit), but in practice this is rarely the case. Editing requires both a number of interactions to go right with our platforms, and the motivation, knowledge and access to time to do so.An Organizer’s Perspective Part I: ‘Anyone can edit’ is not a strategy for growing the Wikimedia movement – DiffOnly a tiny portion of the global population sees the edit button as an invitation and is willing to invest time and energy in the centuries-long project we have invested in: the sum of all human knowledgeAn Organizer’s Perspective Part I: ‘Anyone can edit’ is not a strategy for growing the Wikimedia movement – Diff
